At Rachel Keeling we have a beautifully mature garden which the community gardens and as a result we often have a wonderful harvest of fruit and vegetables. Pears and apples have recently been in abundance and the children have worked collaboratively to recognise which fruit is ripe, pick, prepare and share or cook some beautiful offerings.
Last week children were supported to select the ripe apples and pears and worked together, following the recipes to create Upside Down Pear Cake and Apple Crumble. Banana Pancakes were also made. Children used a range of one handed tools to chop, peel, mash, sieve, slice and mix the ingredients. Some of the apples did not make the cut as they had caterpillars visiting them. Children were supported to set those aside and watch their decay over the course of the week - using magnifiers and close observation to note the changes. The process over the week further developed children's understanding of how we can grow our own food and share and enjoy it as part of a social gathering. Our new term has started with excitement and lots of family news: babies, weddings, graduations, A-Levels, GCSEs, Eid celebrations, holidays, days out and time with friends and family.
Children have immediately been involved in the life of the nursery: harvesting our apples from the garden and baking apple crumble and shopping. Children have also been encouraged to share their summer news: sharing photographs, mark making and writing. Next week we are ready to begin welcoming our new friends who are joining us this term. |
