Independence and Routines

At Rachel Keeling we recognise independence as being a very valuable characteristic we want our children to develop.
Our school routines are designed to support this development: from self registering, to being encouraged to choose where you would like to play. In fact one of our Rachel Keeling Values is 'We have a choice'.
The snack table is a wonderful place to support independence (as well as self confidence, language and communication, self help skills and trying new food and drink!) Soon after children start at Rachel Keeling, they are introduced to the snack to these routines:
  • We don't stop play for snack time as we know different children may feel hungry at different time. We do not want to interrupt extended play for our own purpose.
  • Children are encouraged, supported and trusted to eventually recognise when they feel hungry or thirsty. We value and trust their judgement (we will invite them of course but respect their wishes if they do not want to have something to eat or drink).
  • If children do choose to share snack, they will be expected to wash their hands with soap and dry them.
  • Then they can come and select their crockery or a cup.
  • They can choose where to sit, as long as there is space.
  • They will be invited to look at what is on offer (buttery toast, bananas, cucumber or porridge for example) and serve themselves. 
  • We encourage children to try new foods and share with each other.
  • When children have finished, they wash their cup and plate/bowl and any cutlery and leave it on the draining board.  Children show great pride and joy in being allowed to wash up and serve themselves.  
  • Sometimes children may come to sit at the snack table to drink from their own water bottles and have a chat with their friends. 

Do you encourage your child to prepare and serve themselves at home. Maybe they help to get ready for meals or clear away afterwards?
